The L2CF supported three initiatives at the J. L. King Center to help stimulate learning. First, the foundation sponsored  upgrades to the computer systems. Second, it helped sponsor the Arts Program that was held in conjunction with the June-Teenth celebration. Students displayed their artwork, and some were awarded prizes. Art has been found to help stimulate learning and promote creativity and critical thinking. Finally, one of the most important and promising initiative was our partnership with the King Center to promote and incentivize reading and reading comprehension among boys attending the afterschool program. Based on extensive research, children who are not reading at or above grade level by the third grade are far less likely to progress satisfactorily in grades four through high school. Utilizing the Learning Farm software, the center provides students with a 24-7 instructional tool that provides real-time diagnostics, tutoring, and scoring to indicate progress. After a three-month trial period, young boys in the program achieved some notable increases in the amount of time spent reading and scores on the assignments or tests included in the learning tool.
